1% of the world.
And yet, every day, we work and we live.
TBJ is a place for people, companies, schools and organizations
who want to know the world a little better and act for a better society.
MEET THE GLOBAL LEADERS
Global leaders and peers
illuminate you.
An Indigenous leader from the Amazon, a Swiss philosopher, a Dutch architect — across 10 classes, you engage in dialogue with guests whose assumptions are completely different from yours. Between classes, you work with your peers in group work (GW). To know the world is to know Japan — and to know yourself.

THE JOURNEY
Moving back and forth between the world and yourself,
you keep on changing.

Discover the world
What is happening on the other side of the planet?
What norms and ethics drive it?
The “common sense” we hold may belong only to one moment in time, one corner of the world, one company, one circle of relationships.

Discover your country, your company, yourself
Through the meta-perspective of guests and peers,
see where you stand now
When guests and peers with different assumptions become your mirror, you begin to see the “givens” you have been holding onto — and the shape of who you are.

Put it into practice
Bring your practice back to your peers
Take your insights into daily life and try small experiments. Bring them back to your team at the next class and question them again. This cycle continues for four months.
How the Program Works
Across the 10 classes, your team helps you
keep track of your own border-crossing.
Before every session, you deepen your questions with your team, then engage in dialogue with the guest.
The program is designed so you keep watching your change over 4 months, together with your peers.

Before · Solo work 15 min
Watch & read
Watch the guest’s talk video — short enough for your spare moments.

Before · Team work 1 h
Deepen questions with peers
With the team you travel with for 4 months, share what you felt and the questions you hold.

Session · Dialogue 2 h
Dialogue with the guest
Bring your questions and engage in dialogue with the guest.
↻ This cycle repeats 10 times

A growth program that crosses borders — without leaving Japan

Yohei Kato
Adult developmental scholar / Groningen, the Netherlands
Everyone has their own way of seeing, their own assumptions and values. At a certain point in life, we start to feel: “I want to see the world from a wider perspective,” and “Maybe there is more of me beyond my current frame.” In adult development theory, that moment is a door to the next stage — and one important key to opening it is the experience of crossing borders.
TBJ is not a lecture, but learning through exchanging questions. Rather than searching for the right answer, we ask, “Why do I think that way?” and “What does the world look like from another perspective?” Through those questions and dialogue, our values loosen and are rebuilt.

Founder & CEO
Wako Kudeken
Founder & CEO, Smoooth Inc. / Host, TBJ · 🌏
Wako was born in Okinawa and spent her early childhood in Hawaii. A formative experience after returning to Japan set her on a lifelong exploration of happiness and abundance. While still at university, she worked at the restaurant app TERIYAKI, FiNC Technologies, and DeNA. After graduating from Aoyama Gakuin University, she joined Accenture in 2017, and in 2021 she founded Smoooth Inc. She leads The Borderless Journey (TBJ), an online cross-border program that nurtures changemakers through encounters with global leaders. Alongside the flagship TBJ, where selected next-generation student leaders learn together with executives, she runs programs such as TBJ for Woman, which promotes gender diversity and women's advancement. Drawing on field research in more than 36 countries, from the Nordics to South America, she brings the realities of the world, and connections with the people shaping it, to Japan.

Kokona Takagi
Satonoba University 🇯🇵
Through hula, which she has danced since age 4, Kokona fell in love with Hawaiian culture, history and values, and developed a sense of connection with nature and an awareness of the unseen. Studying abroad in the US in high school taught her to step back from others' expectations and "right answers" and to value her own senses and inner voice. Now a first-year student at Satonoba University, she uses local communities as her field to deepen her relationship with herself and others while exploring what co-creation can look like.

Her interest in peace led her to create programs for young people through UNESCO-related activities. Questioning the social issues in front of her from many angles, she was drawn to the liberal arts as a way of learning, and now supports the running and operations of educational programs. At TBJ she mainly handles PR, carrying to society the voices of a next generation inspired by cross-border experiences to take a step forward.

Scholarship
Scholarship
Giving the next generation
the chance to meet the world.
As future leaders, students can join TBJ for ¥50,000 (¥30,000 with a referral code; excl. tax) — a fraction of the general fee — through our scholarship program. Scholarships are funded every season by supporting companies and individuals — an investment in the future of Japan. So far, ¥6.81M in scholarships has been awarded to students and participants under 35.
Why Scholarship?
Why do we offer scholarships to students?
In Japan, beyond what schools and companies provide and the passive information we take in on YouTube and social media, communities for learning and meeting new people have become a luxury for those with time and money to spare.
As a result, similar people end up gathering together — and even when they set out to encounter something that shakes their values, they find themselves among others who think alike.
In Japan especially, where hierarchy is strong, dialogue across generations rarely happens. The average age of managers is 48.6 — places where generations meet will not appear if we simply wait for them.
Engaging with students is engaging with the future itself. We believe it is a great help to anyone who wants to step out of their own values.
How you can be involved as a supporter
It is said that Homo sapiens has survived to this day not because we were strong as individuals, but because we were able to support one another beyond ties of kinship — even with strangers. Mutual aid is neither a nicety nor an ideal; it is a power and a need that human beings inherently have.
We want to recover the sense that we do not live in isolation as “individuals,” but support one another within the great ecosystem that is the Earth. TBJ is a place where guests, participants, supporters and ambassadors each bring their own resources and grow together.
That is why being a supporter does not end with a so-called “donation.” It means being present for the process of TBJ as a social experiment. It is a role in which you watch, over time, as people gradually change through learning and dialogue, and as that change leads to their next actions. At the final session, you can witness the change in participants that your support has nurtured, and the practices born from it.
All of us already live supported by many people, by our environment, and by things we cannot see. Supporting others is also a way of remembering that, and of passing on what we have received to the next generation and to the future. For anyone who feels “I want young people who will shape the future to open up their possibilities” or “this kind of mutual involvement is what society needs from now on,” supporting TBJ is one way of living as a member of this ecosystem.
In every era, the world has been moved forward by people who believed in — and spoke of — things not yet visible. Society has come this far because there were people who imagined “this is the future I want to leave behind,” instead of saying “that’s just how reality is.”
What kind of future do you want to hand on to your children,
your grandchildren, and the next generation?
If you feel you would like to use even a little of your strength as a human being for the future, we would be delighted if you would help us grow TBJ together.

Egalitarian
The ideal distance between a boss and a subordinate is short. The best boss is a facilitator among equals. Organizational structures are flat. Communication often skips hierarchical lines.

The ideal distance between a boss and a subordinate is long. The best boss is a strong director who leads from the front. Titles matter. Organizational structures are multilayered and fixed. Communication follows set hierarchical lines.

I wish we lived in a society where, as we grow older, our friendships grow richer rather than narrower — a society with far fewer walls between adults and young people.
We set out to break down the walls that make human relationships dull. With that intention, The Borderless Journey adopted a scholarship system and was built as a place where students and adults can share their values with one another.
The supporters who sponsor us.
The ambassadors who help spread the word.
The alumni and members who take part.
The guests who take the stage.
TBJ is a collective of people who share a hope for the future: to support the next generation, and to see Japanese society become a better place.
Alumni take ownership of planning, designing and running the next season, questioning even the very concept of The Borderless Journey — freely changing its shape as it goes through cycles of breaking down and creating anew.
It is a journey with no goal, no success and no failure — each person’s own journey of crossing borders. The Borderless Journey.
